Announcement Incorporation of BharatGen Technology Foundation

The Challenge: AI That Understands India

BharatGen is pleased to announce the incorporation of BharatGen Technology Foundation, a Section 8 (not-for-profit) company, incorporated on 7 November 2025, to advance India’s sovereign, multilingual and multimodal artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The Foundation is led by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and supported by a national consortium comprising IIT Bombay (Lead), IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Mandi, IIT Kharagpur, IIM Indore and IIIT Hyderabad.

BharatGen Technology Foundation is led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Rishi Bal, who brings extensive experience in building and scaling technology-led initiatives across research, innovation and ecosystem partnerships. As CEO, he is responsible for driving the Foundation’s strategic vision, operational execution, and translational impact in alignment with the BharatGen mission.

Board of Directors

Prof. Shireesh Balwant Kedare

Director, IIT Bombay

Prof. Kedare has been Director of IIT Bombay since May 2024. A distinguished academic in energy science and engineering, his work spans solar thermal systems, renewable energy technologies and sustainable rural development. He brings deep experience in academic leadership, institution building, and technology-driven societal impact.

Prof. Milind Diwakar Atrey

Deputy Director – Academics, Research and Translation (ART), IIT Bombay

Prof. Atrey is a globally recognised expert in cryogenic engineering and mechanical systems. With extensive experience across academia, national laboratories and international industry, he provides strategic leadership in research excellence, technology translation and global collaboration.

Prof. Ravindra Dheerendra Gudi

Deputy Director – Finance, Infrastructure and Administration (FIA), IIT Bombay

Prof. Gudi is an expert in process systems engineering and AI/ML applications, with a strong focus on sustainability and green engineering. He has held several senior leadership roles at IIT Bombay and contributes deep expertise in institutional administration and large-scale research management.

Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan

Bank of Baroda Chair Professor in Digital Entrepreneurship, IIT Bombay Dept of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Prof. Ganesh is a leading researcher in artificial intelligence and machine learning, with significant contributions to Indian language technologies, data-efficient AI, and AI for social impact. His work has resulted in multiple translational outcomes, startups and nationally recognised digital public solutions.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati

Independent Director; Co-founder, DeepTech for Bharat Foundation (AI4India.Org)

Mr. Vempati brings extensive experience at the intersection of technology, media, and public policy. A former CEO of Prasar Bharati, he has led large-scale digital transformation initiatives and continues to contribute as a strategic advisor on emerging technologies and institutional governance.

Mohammed Yehtisham Safirulla Karamathulla

Director, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India

Mr. Safirulla is a senior civil servant with significant experience in digital governance, IT policy and e-governance initiatives. His presence on the Board strengthens alignment with national digital transformation priorities and public sector technology strategy.

Together, the Board and leadership team bring academic excellence, policy insight, and operational depth to guide BharatGen Technology Foundation in developing responsible, inclusive and globally competitive AI systems for India.
