BharatGen to Finish AI Models for 22 Indian Languages by Month-End | India’s AI Future

India’s sovereign multilingual AI initiative BharatGen is set to achieve a major milestone by the end of this month by completing text-based AI models for all 22 official Indian languages, Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Launched in October 2024, BharatGen is a government-backed project aimed at creating a sovereign AI engine capable of understanding and generating text in the full spectrum of India’s linguistic diversity. The platform is designed to support key services — including Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) — across multiple Indian languages.

Milestone Progress

According to the minister’s update, BharatGen has already completed language support for 15 languages. By the end of this month, all 22 official languages of India will have their text generation models completed. Additionally, speech and vision modules are already being rolled out for 15 of these languages.

Jitendra Singh emphasized that the development process is dynamic and could include support for additional dialects and language variations over time, expanding BharatGen’s coverage beyond the constitutional list.

Why This Matters

Expanding BharatGen’s text models to all 22 languages is a crucial step toward making AI more inclusive and accessible for India’s linguistically diverse population. Once complete, these models will serve as the foundation for a wide range of applications — from education and governance to accessibility tools and digital services — that work effectively in local languages.

The initiative also positions India to reduce dependence on foreign AI technologies and foster homegrown, culturally attuned artificial intelligence that understands local contexts and nuances.
