New Delhi, 18 September 2025: BharatGen is now backed by the IndiaAI Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), with an allocation of ₹1,058 crore (about US$120 million at ₹88 = US$1). Union Minister of Electronics and IT Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the allocation at an event at The Ashok, New Delhi.
What the allocation supports
The allocation will help BharatGen build large language models and AI models that work across text, speech and images, as well as smaller models designed for specific uses. It will also support India-focused technologies such as text-to-speech, speech-to-text and vision language models.
These models are meant for real-world use in agriculture, governance, finance, healthcare and education. BharatGen will train them on advanced supercomputing clusters.
Where BharatGen stands
Earlier in 2025, BharatGen launched Param1, a bilingual large language model with 2.9 billion parameters, pretrained on 7.5 trillion tokens of English and Hindi. The next phase extends this work to multilingual AI systems across text, speech and vision in all 22 scheduled Indian languages.
BharatGen's consortium brings together IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Mandi, IIM Indore, IIIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur. BharatGen is anchored at the Technology Innovation Hub at IIT Bombay and is also backed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
